Nairobi played host to a high-level diplomatic and business meeting this week as Brazilian Senator H.E. José Gonçalves Oliveira arrived in Kenya for discussions on a potential $40 billion investment in health technology and agriculture. The visit was facilitated by Kenyan businessman James Wanjohi Njoroge, a key player in East Africa–Brazil trade relations.

The Senator, representing Brazil’s largest state, Pará, was warmly received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Tana River Senator Hon. Danson Mungatana, also Chairman of the African Congress Delegation in South Africa.

Wanjohi holds leadership roles in both the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and the East African Chamber of Commerce and has longstanding business interests in Brazil.

“This is more than diplomacy it’s a strategic partnership built on shared economic priorities,” Wanjohi stated. “We’re looking at transformative investments that will bring jobs, technology, and long-term growth to the region.”

Senator Oliveira’s visit includes a series of engagements with Kenyan government officials, private sector leaders, and development partners.

He is expected to meet KNCCI President Dr. Eric Ruto to discuss collaboration in health-tech innovation, agribusiness, and public-private partnerships.

The proposed investment aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and Brazil’s global push to strengthen economic ties with Africa. It also underscores Kenya’s appeal as a gateway for regional growth, thanks to its vibrant tech ecosystem and agricultural potential.

The Senator will continue his East African tour with a visit to Uganda next week. Both Brazil and Kenya are eyeing this engagement as a foundation for a broader South-South cooperation framework.

“This is just the beginning,” Senator Oliveira remarked. “Our partnership with Africa is built on mutual respect, shared goals, and a vision for sustainable development.”
