EPRA Rallies Energy Sector to Invest in Innovation and Research for Universal Access

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has urged energy stakeholders to ramp up investment in research, innovation, and inclusive dialogue to drive universal energy access and support Kenya’s sustainable development agenda.

Speaking during the opening of the 6th Annual EPRA Research and Innovation Conference at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi, EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria underscored the Authority’s dedication to a data-driven, evidence-based regulatory approach aligned with national energy goals.

“As we gather this week, our collective focus must be on how we can harness research, innovation, and inclusive dialogue to help Kenya realise its ambition for affordable, clean, and reliable energy for all,” Kiptoo stated.

“Energy access is more than just lights and power—it’s about transforming lives, creating opportunities, and building resilient communities.”The conference comes at a time of significant progress in Kenya’s energy sector.

The country is on track to reach 10 million electricity connections by the end of 2025, with approximately 81% of its installed grid capacity now sourced from renewable energy. EPRA has been instrumental in this progress, steering the sector through policy reforms, regulatory innovation, and strategic investment facilitation.

Running from June 3 to 5 under the theme “Energy Access,” the conference brings together researchers, policymakers, private sector leaders, and development partners. Participants are expected to explore strategies for scaling up clean energy solutions through policy dialogue, technical sessions, exhibitions, and knowledge-sharing forums.

Insights from the conference will help shape future policy decisions and operational strategies, as Kenya positions itself as a regional leader in clean and inclusive energy access.

The forum underscores the critical role of collaboration and innovation in building a sustainable energy future for all Kenyans.
