Dr. James Mwangi, the Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group Holdings, has been awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City of London, a civic honour dating back to the 12th century that recognises outstanding global leadership and service to humanity.

Dr. Mwangi was feted for his transformative role in advancing financial inclusivity, equitable economic development, and the empowerment of underserved communities across Africa initiatives that have positioned him as one of the continent’s most influential business leaders.

“This honour reaffirms that purposeful leadership has the power to transform lives, unlock potential, and restore dignity to communities,” said Dr. Mwangi during the award ceremony.

“It is also a global recognition that Africa’s time is now and our stories, innovations, and people matter on the world stage.”

Originally granted as a symbol of free trade and civic responsibility in the City of London, the Freedom title today is a symbolic recognition of exceptional contribution to society in fields such as leadership, innovation, and inclusion.
