Isinya Boda Boda Riders Venture into Matatu Business with Support from Equity Bank

Members of the Isinya Boda Boda Sacco in Kajiado County have acquired a 14-seater matatu, marking a major shift from motorcycle taxi services to long-distance passenger transport with the aim of expanding their footprint.

The vehicle will operate on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa route under the Naekana Sacco fleet. The milestone was made possible through a Chama Investment Loan from Equity Bank’s Isinya branch.

The group, which began in 2019 with just 40 members at Stage Moja, pooled their savings and leveraged the bank’s financial products to grow their collective business.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Sacco Chairman Patrick Ng’ang’a credited the bank for its unwavering support. “Equity Bank welcomed us when we were still small. They trained us on savings and investment, and now we’ve bought this matatu. Many of our members have also accessed individual loans to grow their own ventures,” he said.

Benson Githae, Equity Bank’s Regional Relationship Manager for Asset Finance, praised the riders’ discipline and vision. “This is a great example of how micro entrepreneurs can come together and build wealth. We’ll continue supporting such groups through our Chama Investment Loan product,” he said.

Annrita Muchiri, Senior Relationship Manager for Pamoja Banking, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to financial literacy and inclusion. “We aim to empower youth and women groups through training in savings, investments, and debt management,” she noted.

Branch Manager Grace Gworo encouraged the group to explore more financial opportunities, highlighting products like agricultural and insurance premium financing.

The new investment not only diversifies income for Isinya Boda Boda Sacco members but also strengthens their economic resilience, setting an inspiring example for other informal sector groups across the country.
