Absa Champions Employee Wellness at Interbank Games
Absa Bank Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to employee wellness by taking center stage at the 39th Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) Interbank Games, where its teams continue to shine in multiple disciplines.
The games, which bring together employees from banks across the country, have become a platform for showcasing not just athletic talent but also the importance of health, wellness, and teamwork in a high-pressure industry. For Absa, this aligns directly with its employee value proposition built around care, culture, contribution, and career.
This year, the women’s tug-of-war team is eyeing a fourth consecutive title, while swimmers have already delivered stellar results. Valentine Mghoi extended her dominance in the pool, winning the women’s 50m backstroke for the fourth consecutive year and setting a new record of 49.15 seconds. She also struck gold in the 50m freestyle.
“We are fortunate to have Absa’s full support, from access to world-class facilities at the Absa Sports Club to time off for training. This proves Absa is more than an employer it’s an enabler of our wellness and growth,” she said.
The leadership team also led by example. Absa Bank Business Banking Director, Elizabeth Wasunna-Ochwa, secured gold in her age category in the 50m freestyle, while Chief Risk Officer, Chiera Waithaka, also struck gold in the men’s 50m freestyle. Both leaders emphasized the value of sports in promoting mental and physical resilience in a demanding industry.
Employee wellness at Absa extends beyond the pitch and pool. September is marked as Wellness Month at the bank, featuring initiatives such as health checks, a 24/7 employee assistance programme, and lifestyle-focused “Soulfood” sessions. According to Chief People Officer, Mumbi Kahindo, these interventions “reflect a deliberate choice to support the whole person body, mind, and spirit.”
Beyond internal programmes, Absa has a track record of investing in national sports, sponsoring flagship events such as the Absa Kipkeino Classic and the Magical Kenya Open. Absa Bank Kenya Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director, Mwihaki Wachira, noted: “Sports bring people together, nurture the mind, and foster shared joy. That is why we invest in them not just for colleagues but for society.”
From podium finishes to wellness programmes, Absa is demonstrating that investing in employee well-being is more than a corporate policy it is a culture that builds stronger teams, healthier employees, and ultimately, greater success.
