Safaricom’s M-PESA Surpasses 34 Million Users in Kenya, Marking a Milestone in Financial Inclusion

Safaricom’s mobile money platform, M-PESA, has reached a remarkable 34 million subscribers in Kenya, reinforcing its position as a leader in financial inclusion and innovation.

The milestone, achieved in November 2024, highlights Safaricom’s commitment to delivering accessible, seamless and secure financial services across the country.

Launched in 2007 and set to celebrate its 18th anniversary in March 2025, M-PESA has evolved from a simple payment platform into a comprehensive financial ecosystem.

Currently Safaricom M-Pesa offers diverse services including credit, savings, investment solutions, insurance and wealth management, catering to the needs of individuals, businesses and public institutions.

M-PESA’s success is underpinned by its extensive network of over 300,000 agents nationwide, ensuring even the most remote areas of Kenya can access financial services.

The platform also supports over 1.5 million enterprises of all sizes through its merchant payment options, cementing its role in driving economic growth.

Innovating for the Future Safaricom’s strategic innovations have been key to M-PESA’s growth.

Recent additions include M-PESA Ratiba, a first-of-its-kind standing order solution that allows users to automate recurring payments, which garnered over 1 million opt-ins and 260,000 transactions within its first month.

Additionally, M-PESA’s Daraja platform has facilitated seamless integrations for businesses through APIs, fostering a robust developer community of over 90,000 and supporting more than 40,000 integrations.

Customer-Centric Celebrations as part of its silver jubilee celebrations, Safaricom launched the Sambaza Furaha na Safaricom Caravan, a customer engagement initiative that combines festive cheer with problem-solving for users.

Now on its fourth regional tour in Nairobi, the caravan follows successful runs in the Rift Valley, Mountain and Greater Western regions.

Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa hailed the achievement, stating that Safaricom is immensely proud to reach 34 million M-PESA customers in Kenya.

Expanding Horizons beyond Kenya, M-PESA’s impact is spreading across the continent through strategic partnerships and new offerings. Most recently, Safaricom secured an insurance intermediary license, enabling it to provide comprehensive insurance solutions via M-PESA in collaboration with leading providers.
