Somalia has reaffirmed its commitment to sportsmanship and mutual respect, urging that football continue to serve as a bridge of friendship between peoples.

The country’s envoy in Nairobi welcomed Mogadishu City Club to the Somali Embassy after their match in Kenya, describing the team’s participation as a symbol of resilience and hope for young fans across the region.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday 24th, September at the Somali Embassy in Nairobi, Ambassador Jabril Abdulle expressed concern over incidents that occurred after the game, noting they should not overshadow the positive spirit of the tournament.

“We regret and firmly condemn the actions of a few individuals whose behavior overshadowed the remarkable performance by both teams,” he said.

The ambassador commended the Kenya Police Service, the Kenya Police FC Administration, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and Sports Kenya for their professionalism in ensuring safety at Nyayo National Stadium and for extending support to Mogadishu City Club.

He also pointed to wider cooperation between Somalia and Kenya in trade, investment, education, and culture, describing the tournament as part of the broader drive for regional integration.

“Let us remember that football is more than a game – it is a bridge of friendship, a unifier of peoples, and a reflection of African unity and sportsmanship,” he said.

Coach of Mogadishu City Club, Mr. Abdirahman Ali, also addressed the press, distancing the team from the incidents and extending an apology to Kenyans.

“On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we sincerely apologize to the government and people of Kenya. Football is about unity, respect and friendship, and we fully support any action taken against those individuals,” he said.
