Equity Bank’s German Desk Strengthens East Africa–Germany Business Ties

Equity Bank’s German Desk is proving a success just eight months after launch, marking a milestone in strengthening trade and investment between East Africa and Germany.

During the inaugural Annual Status Update Meeting held in Nairobi, German Ambassador to Kenya Sebastian Groth praised the initiative’s early impact as “amazing.”

He highlighted how the desk, a joint effort by Equity Bank and the German Development Finance Institution (DEG), is offering customized financial and relationship management services to German and European SMEs operating in or exploring East Africa.

More than 30 companies have already expanded their regional presence through the desk, opened accounts with Equity, and received continued support.

“This partnership is opening new opportunities while connecting German precision with East African potential,” said Ambassador Groth.

Equity Group CEO Dr. James Mwangi described the desk as a growing movement driving innovation, joint investments, and sustainable development. “What began as a networking platform is now a catalyst for long-term partnerships,” he noted.

The meeting drew several high-profile businesses including Bayer East Africa, Rödl & Partner, Alexander & Partner, and Dieters’ Grill. These firms are not only benefiting from Equity’s services but also bringing affiliates on board.

Dr. Mwangi added that many German firms, often family-owned and legacy-driven, are choosing Kenya as a gateway to East Africa. “These partnerships are about more than trade they are building bridges between cultures and creating lasting value,” he said.

Barbara von Toll, DEG Regional Director, emphasized that the desk also supports knowledge sharing in agriculture, digital innovation, and green industrialization.

Coinciding with the upcoming “Made in Germany Africa” fair in Nairobi, the initiative continues to offer market exposure through investor roadshows, webinars, and direct engagement beyond traditional banking.
