Equity CEO Urges Harvard Students to Champion Africa’s Role in Global Sustainability

Equity Group Holdings CEO, Dr. James Mwangi, has urged future global business leaders to embrace Africa not just as the next economic frontier, but as a vital partner in achieving global sustainability.

Speaking to a delegation of Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from Harvard Business School at Equity’s Nairobi headquarters, Dr. Mwangi emphasized Africa’s demographic and resource potential, saying, “With 27 percent of the world’s population by 2050 and a majority of its untapped natural resources, the world cannot grow without Africa.”

The Harvard team, led by Prof. Hakeem Belo-Osagie Chairman of Etisalat Nigeria and a member of Harvard’s Global Advisory Board was on a study tour exploring African-led development models and private sector innovation.

A highlight of the visit was a dynamic conversation between Dr. Mwangi and Prof. Belo-Osagie on transformative leadership and inclusive growth. Prof. Belo-Osagie praised Dr. Mwangi’s leadership in turning Equity from a struggling rural building society into Eastern and Central Africa’s largest financial institution, with a balance sheet exceeding US$15 billion.

“We were not just building a bank; we were restoring dignity,” Dr. Mwangi said, outlining Equity’s mission-driven approach that prioritizes socio-economic transformation over profit. “We measure success by the lives we touch youth empowered, businesses financed, and communities uplifted.”

On technology, Dr. Mwangi underscored the importance of deploying digital tools equitably to close Africa’s productivity gap. He highlighted the role of AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity in fostering inclusive financial systems.

The visiting scholars engaged him on ethical leadership, fraud prevention, and sustainability. Dr. Mwangi acknowledged challenges but affirmed Equity’s resilience.

“Integrity is in how we respond,” he said.Prof. Belo-Osagie concluded, “Equity is a testament to how vision and purpose can reshape Africa’s story and the world’s future.”
