Konza deploys drone technology to restore degraded land in major conservation breakthrough

The Konza Technopolis Development Authority has stepped up efforts to advance environmental conservation and agricultural transformation after successfully conducting a drone-enabled seedball broadcasting exercise at the Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy, marking a major milestone in the use of technology for ecological restoration.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the authority said the initiative seeks to promote restoration of degraded land, strengthen environmental stability and boost agricultural productivity through the application of innovative drone technology.

A total of 75 kilograms of seedballs carrying indigenous tree species were deployed using drones across targeted degraded sections of the conservancy in what officials described as one of Kenya’s first drone-assisted ecological restoration exercises within an urban-adjacent conservancy.

Drone technology takes centre stage in restoration drive

According to the authority, the seedballs contained three key indigenous tree species  wild olive, shittah tree and fever tree  strategically dispersed across nearly 1,000 acres of degraded savannah land.

The seedballs, made from compacted charcoal, clay, dust and compost, are designed to protect seeds from predation, retain moisture and improve germination rates by as much as 80 per cent compared to conventional seed broadcasting methods.

Officials said the exercise demonstrated how modern airborne technology can significantly improve efficiency in landscape restoration while accelerating vegetation regeneration efforts.

Technology is a game changer, says Konza

Speaking during the exercise, Chief Manager for Physical Planning Compliance and Environment at the authority, Annah Musyimi, said embracing emerging technologies is critical in strengthening environmental conservation and agricultural productivity.

“Technology is undoubtedly a game changer and we as the Technopolis Development Authority have taken the lead in showcasing this.”

She added:

“Today we have witnessed our drones deploy a total of 75kgs of seedballs containing three different tree species over a total land area of 1000 acres in a matter of minutes.”

Kenya positions itself as regional drone innovation hub

The exercise further highlights Konza’s growing role as a national innovation centre, particularly through the Konza National Drone Corridor, Kenya’s dedicated testing zone for unmanned aircraft systems.

The authority said the government continues to prioritise partnerships between ministries, research institutions and technology providers to accelerate innovative agricultural practices, strengthen food security and support long-term environmental conservation, positioning Kenya as a regional leader in emerging technologies.
