NewsLightKenya holds second phishing awareness training, certifies trainers

NewsLightKenya has conducted the second Training of Trainers (ToT) session under the Access4Safe Project, equipping trainers with advanced knowledge and practical skills to combat phishing attacks and promote digital safety among persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The training brought together trainers from different backgrounds to strengthen their capacity to identify, prevent and respond to phishing scams, one of the fastest-growing cyber threats targeting internet users.
Participants were taken through practical sessions on recognising fake emails, fraudulent websites, malicious links, social engineering tactics and other online scams that expose individuals to financial loss, identity theft and data breaches.
The trainers also explored best practices for securing digital accounts through strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, safe browsing habits and responsible use of social media platforms.
The interactive sessions enabled participants to share experiences and learn practical approaches to protecting vulnerable internet users from emerging cyber threats.
The project is part of NewsLightKenya’s broader commitment to promoting digital inclusion by ensuring persons with disabilities have the knowledge and confidence to safely access digital platforms for education, employment, entrepreneurship and communication.
Building digital safety champions
Project Lead Emmanuel Masinde said building the capacity of trainers is essential in creating sustainable digital safety awareness within communities.
“Phishing attacks continue to evolve and increasingly target vulnerable internet users. Through this Training of Trainers programme, we are creating a network of digital safety champions who will cascade this knowledge to persons with disabilities and other community members, helping them protect themselves online,” said Masinde.
He noted that empowering trainers with practical cybersecurity skills would strengthen community resilience against cybercrime while promoting a safer and more inclusive digital environment.
To recognise their successful completion of the second training session, the trainers were awarded certificates, marking another milestone in the implementation of the Access4Safe Project. The certification acknowledges their readiness to lead digital safety awareness sessions and mentor others on safe online practices.
NewsLightKenya through our Project Finance Manager Winnie Atieno reaffirmed its commitment to advancing digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness through partnerships and community-based initiatives that ensure no one is left behind in the digital age.
She added that the trainers will now support the rollout of digital safety education within their respective communities, expanding the project’s impact and helping build a more secure and inclusive online ecosystem for persons with disabilities.
