Kenya Has Enough Fuel Stocks as Government Moves to Safeguard Supply Stability
Kenyans have been assured of continued fuel availability after the government confirmed that the country has sufficient petroleum stocks to sustain national demand for more than a month, even as additional cargo shipments remain on course to boost reserves further.
Speaking during a familiarization tour of major petroleum facilities in the Coast region, Petroleum Principal Secretary Kello Harsama said the country’s fuel supply chain remains stable, with existing reserves and incoming shipments helping shield consumers from possible shortages and price fluctuations.
Harsama noted that Kenya has continued to maintain a reliable petroleum supply system that compares favorably with other countries in the region, thanks to strong infrastructure investments and effective management of fuel imports and distribution.
He said the government remains focused on strengthening strategic petroleum infrastructure, expanding fuel storage capacity, and improving efficiency across the supply chain in a move aimed at reinforcing Kenya’s position as a regional energy and logistics hub.
Key Coast Facilities Support Fuel Security
As part of the inspection tour, the PS visited several critical petroleum facilities, including Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited, a subsidiary of Kenya Pipeline Company, the Kipevu Oil Terminal 2 operated by Kenya Ports Authority, as well as the VTTI terminal and Taifa Gas facilities located in Dongo Kundu.
While at Kipevu Oil Terminal 2, Harsama observed ongoing fuel offloading operations and emphasized the strategic importance of the facility in handling petroleum imports and ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply not only for Kenya but also for countries across the East African region.
The visit also underscored the government’s push to expand liquefied petroleum gas storage infrastructure as demand for clean cooking energy continues to rise. Officials say increased LPG storage capacity will improve energy access, strengthen supply resilience, and support Kenya’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
