Tharaka Nithi Road Upgrades Spark Optimism Among Residents and Investors
Youths take part in construction of culvert works in Kaanwa along the recently completed Chuka-Kathwana road
Residents, investors and business people in Tharaka Nithi are expressing optimism over ongoing infrastructure projects in the region, saying improved roads and government developments are already transforming transport, trade and investment opportunities.
Speaking during a site visit in Kaanwa, real estate director Eustas Mwambia said he was impressed by the progress of road works connecting Chuka Technical Institute to Kathwana and the county headquarters.
Mwambia, said he had travelled to the area to show a client a piece of land near Chuka Technical Institute but was surprised by the improvement of the road network.
“Earlier, this road had serious potholes and movement was difficult, but today the road is smooth and work is progressing well. I was even able to show my client the road equipment, tractors and lorries working along the route,” he said.
He noted that the improved infrastructure, coupled with electricity, water connectivity and government hostel projects near Chuka Technical Institute, is creating a favourable environment for investment.
“We were reflecting on the many projects happening in Tharaka Nithi and realized that sometimes people engage in politics without going to the ground to see what is actually happening. Kazi inafanyika ground,” he said.
He commended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and President William Ruto for pushing development projects in the region, saying residents were already witnessing positive change within a short period.
Another resident, Kanga Mbembe, said the Chuka–Kathwana road had previously been nearly impassable due to rocky and bushy sections but conditions have significantly improved.
“This road was very difficult to use before, but now movement has become smooth because the rocks have been removed and the road has been improved. We need to speak the truth when good things are happening,” he said.
He observed that the ongoing works had also triggered further development, especially the upgrading of the road leading to Chuka Technical Institute.
According to him, the institution’s growing student population, estimated at around 7,000 students , is creating opportunities for investors constructing hostels and rental housing.

“Chuka Technical Institute is growing very fast and investors now have a huge opportunity because students need accommodation,” he said.
Mbembe urged Kenyans to appreciate positive development while constructively pointing out challenges where necessary.
“Let us support good work and avoid destructive politics. Where work is happening, let us appreciate it, and where there are delays, let us raise concerns peacefully and respectfully,” he added.
Dennis Mwendwa Gitari, another resident, expressed gratitude for the road upgrades, saying the projects had not only improved transport but also created employment opportunities for local youth.
“I am also happy because I got a job here together with my friends. We are very grateful,” he added.
Residents now say they expect the road to be fully completed in the coming months, with hopes that additional road extensions will further improve connectivity and open up more economic opportunities across Tharaka Nithi County.
