Nairobi Intensifies Clean-Up Drive in Waste Hotspots Under SafishaKaNairo Campaign
The Nairobi City County has intensified a citywide clean-up exercise targeting major waste hotspots across residential estates, informal settlements and public markets under the SafishaKaNairo campaign.
The initiative, implemented in partnership with Zoomlion Kenya, aims to improve sanitation, restore environmental dignity and reduce public health risks associated with poor waste management and illegal dumping.
County officials described the intervention as an urgent and coordinated response to growing waste accumulation in densely populated neighbourhoods across the capital.
Large-scale waste evacuation and environmental restoration activities are currently underway in Kawangware-Gitanga and Borabora in Dagoretti North, Morale Road and Kinyango in Kamukunji, Korogocho Market and Ngomongo in Ruaraka, Huruma Grounds and Huruma Flats in Mathare, as well as Othaya Market and Kamukunji Grounds in Kibra.
Other targeted areas include Vumilia in Embakasi East, Githwamba and St. Francis in Kasarani, the CBD Market in Starehe, Senior Citizen in Dagoretti South and English Press in Embakasi South.
Health and sanitation experts involved in the programme noted that improved waste management is critical in reducing preventable diseases linked to contaminated environments and poor sanitation.
Beyond waste evacuation, the campaign seeks to promote environmental responsibility among residents and ensure sanitation services extend beyond the Central Business District to underserved communities.
Residents have been urged to support the initiative by avoiding illegal dumping and participating in community clean-up activities.
County governments across the country have also been encouraged to adopt similar sanitation models to improve urban cleanliness and public health.
Environmental stakeholders and youth groups were further called upon to collaborate on long-term recycling, waste management and waste-to-value initiatives aimed at creating cleaner neighbourhoods and economic opportunities.
The campaign is being amplified online through hashtags including #SafishaKanairo, #SafishaDandoraDumpingSite and #CleanCities to encourage public participation and awareness on sustainable waste management practices.
Zoomlion Kenya, which is implementing the initiative under a Public-Private Partnership model, said the programme focuses on sustainable environmental outcomes through coordinated sanitation and landfill management interventions.
