Kenya’s Joyline Chepkemoi Wins World U20 5,000m Bronze as Uganda’s Cherop Strikes Gold

Kenya’s Joyline Chepkemoi claimed the bronze medal in the women’s 5,000m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships after producing a personal best time of 15:09.08.

Uganda’s Charity Cherop stormed to the gold medal in 15:03.88, while Ethiopia’s Shito Gumi secured silver in 15:07.91.

Fellow Kenyan Cynthia Chepkirui narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in 15:14.86. The result marked a strong showing for East Africa, with Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya occupying the top four places in the championship final.

The race began at a controlled early pace before accelerating over the final laps, with Cherop producing the strongest finishing kick to break away and secure Uganda’s first gold medal of the championships. Chepkemoi’s podium finish added to Kenya’s medal tally after she recorded a personal best in a tightly contested battle for bronze.
