Michael Joseph Bows Out as Kenya Airways Chairman After Nine Years of Service
Michael Joseph, the long-serving chairman and director of Kenya Airways (KQ), has officially retired after nearly a decade at the helm of the national carrier.
Joseph, who took over as chairman in 2016 and joined the board in 2016 after being appointed by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, stepped down from his position on Thursday, June 13, bringing to a close a critical chapter in the airline’s leadership. His nine-year tenure was marked by significant turbulence, including the COVID-19 pandemic, mounting debt, and operational losses, all of which put the airline’s resilience and governance under scrutiny.
In a statement released by KQ, the board praised Joseph for his leadership and dedication, describing him as instrumental in navigating the airline through some of its most challenging years. Joseph had earlier expressed his intention to step down once a suitable replacement was found. The board has now initiated the search for a new chairperson.
The former Safaricom CEO is widely recognized for his transformational role in Kenya’s telecommunications industry, and his leadership at KQ brought both expectations and pressure. Under his tenure, the airline embarked on restructuring programs aimed at restoring profitability and competitiveness, although it continued to grapple with financial instability and the burden of debt.
Joseph’s exit marks a new era for Kenya Airways as it seeks to redefine its strategy and restore investor and public confidence. His departure comes at a time when the airline is looking to strengthen its operational efficiency and expand its regional and global footprint.
Joseph has stated that he will now focus on personal pursuits, though he remains a revered figure in Kenya’s corporate scene. His legacy at KQ remains a blend of steady leadership amid headwinds and a persistent push for recovery.
