Kenya’s Energy Chief Appointed Vice Chair of Global Energy Regulators Body

Kenya has secured a key seat at the global energy table following the appointment of Daniel Kiptoo Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), as Vice Chair of the International Confederation of Energy Regulators (ICER). The prestigious appointment underscores Kenya’s growing influence in global energy regulation and transition.

Speaking on the announcement, Kiptoo said, “This appointment is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to the strength of Kenya’s regulatory frameworks and our progress in energy reforms. It also provides a critical opportunity to represent Africa’s voice in shaping sustainable and inclusive energy systems worldwide.”

This role adds to Kiptoo’s expanding international leadership. In July 2024, he was elected to chair the Global Clean Energy Promoter Steering Committee under the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA), a coalition of more than 80 regulatory bodies, with African representation from eight countries. Earlier in May 2024, he was re-elected as Chairperson of the Regional Association of Energy Regulators for Eastern and Southern Africa (RAERESA).

RAERESA is a specialized agency of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), aimed at facilitating cooperation among energy regulators in the region. It supports the harmonization of energy regulatory frameworks to promote cross-border energy trade and investment.

His multiple appointments place EPRA and Kenya at the forefront of continental and global regulatory discourse. They also bring significant benefits: from greater investor confidence in Kenya’s energy sector to expanded opportunities for technical training, policy development, and knowledge exchange. Kenya is now strategically positioned to influence international energy policy, especially on issues like energy transition, digitalisation, and innovation.

ICER brings together over 200 energy regulators across the globe, facilitating cooperation, dialogue, and the sharing of best practices to support sustainable, competitive energy markets. Kenya’s rising profile within this network affirms its commitment to clean, secure, and inclusive energy development.
