Isiolo Leaders Demand Senate Action, Decry Governance Breakdown in Joint Statement

In a joint statement, leaders, professionals, and community representatives from Isiolo, Marsabit, and Tana River counties have raised alarm over what they term as a governance crisis in Isiolo County. They are urging the Senate to uphold the recent impeachment of the Isiolo Governor, citing widespread corruption, collapsed public services, and a breach of the spirit of devolution.

The leaders accuse the county leadership of gross mismanagement and entrenched impunity, pointing to the deterioration of essential services including healthcare, education, and access to water.

They allege that development resources have been squandered through illegal tenders, nepotism, and patronage networks, leaving residents disillusioned and underserved.

“The trust of the people has been betrayed. Institutional integrity has been eroded. What we are witnessing in Isiolo is not just administrative failure it is a fundamental assault on constitutional governance,” the statement reads.

The leaders paid glowing tribute to the sixteen Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) who championed and passed the impeachment motion, lauding their courage and fidelity to democratic principles in the face of threats and alleged bribery attempts.

“Their actions reflect the will of Isiolo’s residents and a deep commitment to democratic values,” the leaders emphasized.

Addressing the Senate, they called for urgent and impartial adjudication of the impeachment motion, stressing that the case is backed by solid evidence and is pivotal to restoring public confidence in devolved governance. They also urged the Senate to resist any political interference and uphold its role as a guardian of the Constitution.

The judiciary, too, came under scrutiny. The leaders claimed the governor has used judicial channels to frustrate the impeachment process and warned against allowing the courts to be weaponized to shield executive impunity. They called on Chief Justice Martha Koome to protect the independence of legislative institutions and ensure judicial processes are not manipulated.

The statement also appealed to President William Ruto to rein in elements within the national executive and security agencies allegedly working in tandem with the governor to obstruct constitutional processes. They cited the illegal publication of a gazette notice appointing a new speaker as a recent example of executive overreach.

Looking forward, the leaders expressed hope for a renewed Isiolo one anchored in accountability, transparent leadership, and effective service delivery.

“This impeachment is not just about removing a failed leader. It is about opening a new chapter for Isiolo,” stated the statement.

The leaders appealed for peace and vigilance as a call to action , affirming the people’s commitment to safeguarding democracy and reclaiming their county.
