Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Passes Away at 63, Family Probing Cause

The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati, who passed away on Thursday night, has stated that the cause of his death remains unknown.

Speaking to the media outside Lee Funeral Home, family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa Wafula revealed that a meeting will be held on Friday evening to deliberate on key matters, including the possibility of conducting a postmortem to determine the cause of death.

Wafula noted that the family has yet to consult with doctors regarding the circumstances surrounding Chebukati’s passing. He confirmed that the former IEBC chair had been unwell and breathed his last shortly after 11:00 pm.

“All the family is requesting at this time is privacy. We will issue a formal statement tomorrow after our meeting,” Wafula said.

Chebukati, 63, was a seasoned lawyer best known for his six-year tenure at the helm of the IEBC, where he oversaw two presidential elections, serving under both former President Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto.

Following his death, tributes have poured in from leaders across the political divide. President Ruto mourned Chebukati as a diligent and principled leader who served the nation with integrity.

“I have received the news of the passing of former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity,” Ruto said in his condolence message.More details are expected following the family’s deliberations.
