UN General Assembly President Visits Equity to Champion Youth Innovation and Digital Technology

His Excellency Philemon Yang, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), visited Equity Group for high-level discussions on youth innovation, digital technology, and sustainable development.

H.E. Yang, a former Prime Minister of Cameroon, reiterated his commitment to bridging the digital divide and leveraging technology to address global development challenges.

His visit to Equity aligns with the Group’s mission to empower young people with digital skills essential for the modern economy.As part of the visit, President Yang toured Equity’s state-of-the-art technology and innovation hub, which trains young professionals many of whom are alumni of the Equity Leaders Program in emerging digital technologies.

Addressing the youth, he encouraged them to embrace innovation and perseverance

“The efforts you make today are key to shaping your future. Cultivate a positive attitude,it will help you become a strong negotiator and foster tolerance. Never discard your imagination. In many ways, your imagination defines you and will guide you to success. Equity has given you a platform; take advantage of it, learn, and use your skills to create meaningful change in the world around you,” he said

The discussions also underscored the critical role of public-private partnerships in fostering technological advancements and opening up opportunities for young people in the digital economy.

Making his remarks,Professor Isaac Macharia expressed appreciation for the visit, stating,

“We are honored to host President Yang and showcase Equity’s dedication to youth empowerment and digital inclusion. We believe that investing in young people and equipping them with the tools to succeed in the digital age is essential for sustainable development,” he said.

The meeting was attended by UNON Director-General and UN Under-Secretary-General Zainab Hawa Bangura, as well as representatives from UN agencies, including UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, and UNDP.

Senior members of the Kenyan government were also present, reinforcing the collaboration between Equity and the United Nations in achieving shared development goals.

The visit follows a recent tour of Equity’s technology hub by Kenya’s ICT Ministry, which commended the bank and its Equity Group Foundation for their commitment to nurturing young talent in the digital sector.

Through its innovation hub, Equity continues to demonstrate its dedication to equipping the next generation with the skills required to navigate the evolving technological landscape.
