A massive fire swept through the densely populated Mathare 4B area late Sunday night, leaving dozens of families homeless 6 dead,3 hospitalised and destroying property worth hundreds of thousands of shillings.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out around 11:45 PM, quickly engulfing makeshift structures made of timber and iron sheets. With narrow access routes and no immediate response from firefighting units, residents were forced to use buckets of water and sand in a desperate attempt to contain the flames.
“I lost everything my home, my documents, even my children’s school books,” said Mary Achieng’, a mother of four who stood beside the charred remains of her shack. “We don’t know where we’ll sleep tonight.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault. This latest incident underscores the long-standing infrastructure challenges facing informal settlements in Nairobi, where fire outbreaks are alarmingly frequent due to poor planning, lack of basic services, and overloaded power lines.
Local leaders and humanitarian organizations have begun mobilizing aid. Nairobi County emergency officials arrived on the scene Monday morning to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. However, many victims say they have received little help so far and are calling on the government for urgent support.
“We need immediate intervention food, shelter, and clothing. These are people who have nothing left,” said area youth leader Brian Otieno. This tragedy comes just weeks before the expected onset of the cold season, compounding the urgency for a coordinated humanitarian response. As families sift through the rubble of their former homes, many are left hoping that this latest disaster will finally spur action toward safer, more resilient housing in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
