Vijana na Ruto, an inter-party youth lobby bringing together young people from different political parties, has called on Parliament to take action against Starehe MP Amos Mwago over remarks he allegedly made about President William Ruto in Nakuru.

The group wants National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to take up the matter formally and give Mwago an opportunity to clarify the remarks attributed to him.

Speaking during a press briefing, Vijana na Ruto national chairperson Isaack Ntarangwe said political differences should not undermine the dignity of the presidency.

“Political criticism is legitimate and protected. Personal insults directed at the institution of the presidency are not,” Ntarangwe said.

He said Mwago should be given an opportunity to confirm or deny the remarks on record before Parliament considers further action.

“We request that Hon Mwago be given an opportunity to clarify, on record, whether the remarks attributed to him are accurate. Should the remarks be confirmed, Hon Mwago should be required to publicly and unreservedly apologise to the President and to the nation,” Ntarangwe said.

The group said its position was not intended to restrict political criticism but to uphold the standards expected of elected leaders.

“There is a difference between challenging policy and demeaning the office that every Kenyan, regardless of political persuasion, is called to respect,” Ntarangwe said.

The group said the remarks attributed to Mwago were made during a political engagement in Nakuru last week.

Ntarangwe said failing to address conduct that undermines the dignity of the presidency could establish a precedent for future political engagements.

“We do not take this matter lightly. Silence in the face of such conduct sets a precedent that erodes the respect owed to the highest office in the land, regardless of who occupies it today or in the future,” he said.

The group also criticised Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe over his political realignment after leaving the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Vijana na Ruto secretariat member Brian Tinega accused Kagombe of abandoning the party and seeking political sympathy after his departure.

“We want to tell you, Honourable Kagombe, wherever you go, you will be trampled with your track record. You have failed the people of Gatundu South, and now you are looking for sympathy,” Tinega said.

Tinega also warned politicians who have left UDA for opposition parties that they would be judged by their political records in the 2027 General Election.

“In 2027, you are singing your songs of one term to the President, but in 2027, you will be one term,” he said.

The group further addressed reports of political violence in Homa Bay County, condemning violence regardless of the political side involved.

It called on the National Police Service and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents and hold accountable anyone found responsible.

The youth group then turned its attention to young Kenyans, urging them to remain informed and organised while holding leaders accountable regardless of their title, region or political party.

“We call upon you to reject political opportunism dressed up as principle and to see through leaders who abandon those who stood by them the moment it becomes politically convenient,” the group said.

Vijana na Ruto said it remained committed to what it described as a disciplined, accountable and united political movement, with loyalty, gratitude and respect for national institutions, including the presidency, remaining central to its agenda.
