“Sisi Jamii Ya Wafugaji Rais Ametupendelea Sana”: Elder Hilariously Explains Amboseli Empusel Using President Ruto’s

Kajiado, Kenya —November 6, 2025. What’s in a name? That question echoed through the air at the third Maa Cultural and Tourism Festival in Kajiado, as visitors found themselves puzzled by the twin identity of one of Kenya’s most iconic parks Amboseli to the world, but Empusel to the local Maasai.

To clear the confusion and stir laughter, elder Joshua Barnet from the Kitenden Community Conservancy took the stage, delivering a witty explanation that captivated the crowd. “Amboseli na Empusel ni jina moja,” he said amid laughter. “Ni kama mmoja kusema President William, na mwingine aseme Ruto wote ni mtu mmoja!” (Amboseli and Empusel are the same; it’s like calling someone President William or Ruto it’s one person!)

The crowd roared with laughter, appreciating both his humour and insight. Among them, Loise Sangaine, a local businesswoman, expressed gratitude to the government, saying, “Sisi jamii ya wafugaji Rais ametupendelea sana”.“The President has been fair and kind to the pastoral community.” She added that Amboseli had become a vital economic hub, linking the Maasai community, wildlife, and the government through tourism and conservancy initiatives that fund children’s education and community projects.

Barnet went on to explain that Empusel derives from a Maa word meaning “salty dust” or “dusty place,” perfectly describing Amboseli’s shimmering plains and dry salt beds. Yet beyond linguistics, the festival became a celebration of justice and heritage, following President William Ruto’s formal hand-over of Amboseli National Park to the Kajiado County Government a move the Maasai community hailed as historic.

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku described the transfer as “the correction of a historical injustice.” Visibly emotional, he said, “Every administration was petitioned to return Amboseli to its rightful custodians. President Ruto had the courage to do it. This is like witnessing independence all over again.”

His sentiments were echoed by Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit, who lauded the President’s bold decision, noting that previous leaders had avoided addressing the issue. “Many had this matter on their desks Moi, Kibaki, Uhuru but only Ruto had the courage to act,” he said.

With the park’s management now under county control, the Maasai community anticipates greater benefits, as local revenue estimated at KSh 1.5 billion annually will directly support education, bursaries, and development.

Whether known as Amboseli or Empusel, the park remains a symbol of natural beauty, cultural pride, and now, long-awaited empowerment for the Maa Nation.
