Chesang, Cheruiyot Clinch Eldoret City Marathon Titles
Ugandan runner Dorrine Chesang and Kenya’s Koech Cheruiyot were crowned champions of the Eldoret City Marathon after dominant performances in the women’s and men’s races respectively on Sunday.
Chesang powered to victory in the women’s race after clocking 2:30:26, holding off a strong challenge from Kenya’s Margaret Muruiki who finished second in 2:30:45.
Jackline Jerono completed the podium places in third after timing 2:31:51.
Speaking after the race, Chesang said patience and tactical discipline were key to her triumph, revealing she made her move after the 25-kilometre mark.
“It was just like our training session. When I reached 25 kilometres, I decided to run my race and that is how I won,” said Chesang.
Beatrice Miningwo finished fourth in 2:32:01, while Loyce Joy Kemuma came fifth in 2:32:24.
Former marathon star Sharon Jemutai Cherop crossed sixth in 2:32:52, ahead of Stella Chepkorir Koros who clocked 2:33:19 for seventh place.
Damaris Areba, Gladys Chemweno and Flomena Cheyech completed the top ten.
In the men’s race, Cheruiyot stormed to victory in 2:12:53, fending off stiff competition from Leonard Kiprotich who finished second in 2:13:23.
Hosea Kiplimo sealed third place in 2:13:29, while Amos Kipkemoi Cheruiyot and Nehemiah Sang rounded out the top five in 2:13:43 and 2:13:59 respectively.
Geoffrey Chirchir, Nicholas Chelule, Peter Kwemoi Ndorobo, Micah Chemweno and Josphat Bett completed the top ten.
The annual race once again attracted top regional talent, reinforcing Eldoret’s reputation as the City of champions and one of Kenya’s premier long-distance running hubs.
