Kenyan Detectives Foil Robbery Plot Targeting Senior Military Officer in Kitengela

Detectives have thwarted a planned robbery targeting a senior military officer in Kitengela, Kajiado County, arresting six suspects in an intelligence-led operation that has exposed an alleged criminal syndicate involving serving Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel and civilian accomplices.

The operation, led by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), followed credible intelligence received on Monday, March 23, 2026, indicating that a senior military officer had been profiled and was being targeted for a violent robbery.

Intelligence-led surveillance

According to investigators, the suspects were placed under close surveillance immediately after the tip-off, with detectives discreetly monitoring their movements, communication patterns, and preparations in the days leading up to the planned attack.

On the day of the operation, officers strategically secured the target location and surrounding areas in Kitengela, while both overt and covert teams were deployed to track the suspects’ vehicles and coordinate the takedown.

How the planned robbery unfolded

On the material day, the suspects arrived at the scene in two vehicles: a black Toyota Harrier, registration number $$KCR\ 809K$$, and a Toyota Ractis, registration number $$KCM\ 804L$$, which remained nearby with a driver on standby, believed to be assigned as a getaway vehicle.

A female suspect alighted from the Toyota Harrier and walked towards the officer’s main gate, posing as a visitor seeking access. Unbeknownst to her, detectives had already sealed off the area and were monitoring her movements in real time.

As she attempted to initiate contact at the gate, officers swiftly moved in and arrested her. The coordinated arrest triggered immediate action from backup teams who intercepted and blocked both the Harrier and the Ractis before any of the suspects could escape.

Identities of the arrested suspects

DCI officers confirmed that six suspects were arrested during the operation. They were identified as:

– Charles Kiio Matata – a KDF sergeant stationed at Kahawa Garrison

– David Ng’aa Mwangangi – a civilian mechanic attached to the KDF at Kahawa Barracks

– Samuel Agango Odoyo – a KDF service member currently on interdiction

– Alex Mumo Kisilu – resident of Umoja

– Richard Mwania Muasya – resident of Tala

– Stella Nzuki Mweni – resident of Umoja Inner Core

All six suspects are being held in custody as detectives continue processing, profiling, and interrogating them to establish their individual roles, possible accomplices, and the full extent of the planned robbery.

Weapons, uniforms and tools recovered

A thorough search at the scene and inside the vehicles led to the recovery of several items believed to have been intended for use in the aborted robbery.

Among the items recovered were:

– KDF jungle uniforms

– Military boots

– A crowbar

– A claw hammer

– A knife

– Pliers

– Multiple mobile phones

Detectives believe the military uniforms and boots may have been intended to facilitate impersonation of security officers, enabling the gang to gain easier access, intimidate the victim, or evade suspicion during the operation.

The mobile phones have been seized for digital forensics to retrieve communication records, call logs, and possible links to other criminal actors or previous incidents.

Scene processed as investigations widen

Crime scene experts processed the scene in Kitengela, documenting all physical and forensic evidence before the vehicles were towed for further examination.

Investigators say the case has now widened beyond the foiled single robbery attempt, with a focus on establishing:

– The structure and hierarchy of the suspected criminal syndicate

– Any previous robberies or violent crimes linked to the group

– How official military resources or identities may have been abused

– Whether other security personnel or civilians are part of the network

The DCI is also working closely with military police and relevant KDF units to coordinate internal and external investigations involving serving and interdicted officers.

DCI vows to dismantle criminal networks

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks and ensuring that all individuals involved in crime, regardless of rank, status, or institution, face the full force of the law.

The agency further appealed to members of the public to continue sharing timely information on suspicious activities, noting that actionable intelligence remains a critical tool in preventing violent crimes before they occur.

The six suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed and all relevant statements, exhibits, and forensic reports are consolidated into a comprehensive case file.
