Freight Services Set to Resume After Successful Rail Test Run on Uplands–Kijabe- Longonot Corridor
Kenya Railways has successfully conducted a test run from Uplands Railway Station to the Kijabe– Railway Station, marking a major step towards the resumption of operations on the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) corridor.
Operations along the section had been suspended following above-normal rainfall in April and May 2024, which washed away parts of the railway line in Kijabe, rendering the corridor impassable. The disruption severely affected rail transport between the Port of Mombasa, Kenya’s hinterland, and neighbouring countries, halting the movement of farm inputs, agricultural produce, steel products, containerized cargo, and other conventional goods.
Speaking during the test ride, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said the successful trial marks a significant milestone for the corporation and the regional trade network.

“This is a major boost to our operations. Following the successful test runs, freight services are set to resume, bringing much-needed relief to traders in Kenya’s western region and our neighbouring countries including Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Mainga said.
He added that the achievement clears the way for the restoration of normal services, reaffirming Kenya Railways’ commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transport solutions to its customers.

While the full restoration of the railway track has been completed, protection works and river training activities will continue even as train operations resume along the section.
