Five Killed in Horrific Crash Between Trailer and Tractor on Eldoret-Nakuru Highway
Five people lost their lives on Tuesday following a devastating road accident involving a trailer and a tractor near Mathaarub Centre along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru highway.
The tragic crash occurred a few kilometres from Burnt Forest, sending shockwaves through the local community and causing a major traffic disruption along the road.
According to witnesses at the scene, the accident happened when a trailer travelling from the Nakuru direction rammed into a tractor that was heading in the opposite direction. The force of the collision caused the tractor to overturn, trapping and crushing several people who were on board.
“The lorry driver smashed into the tractor, causing a heavy impact during which the tractor overturned, crushing the loaders who were on board,” said one witness.
The collision left a trail of destruction, with both vehicles sustaining extensive damage. Images from the scene showed residents gathering around the wreckage as emergency responders worked to recover the victims and clear the highway.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the incident and said police officers were immediately deployed to the scene to manage the situation and assist in investigations.
“We have lost five people in the accident, and our officers are still at the scene trying to handle the situation,” said Sicharani.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the trailer may have developed brake failure before the crash. According to police, the driver appeared unable to control the vehicle as it approached the tractor.
“Initial investigations indicate that the trailer, which was speeding from the Nakuru direction, appeared to have lost its brakes and rammed into the tractor that was heading in the opposite direction,” Sicharani said.
The impact was so severe that the tractor was extensively damaged. Witnesses reported that all the victims were male, including the drivers of both vehicles.
Authorities said the bodies of the deceased were removed from the scene and transported to a mortuary in Eldoret pending identification and postmortem examinations.
The accident triggered a heavy traffic jam along the highway, one of the country’s busiest transport corridors linking western Kenya to the Rift Valley and Nairobi. Motorists were forced to endure long delays as police officers and emergency teams worked to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
Road safety concerns have once again come into focus following the tragedy. Residents and motorists who frequent the Eldoret-Nakuru highway called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and regular inspections of commercial vehicles to prevent accidents linked to mechanical failures.
Police have launched further investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly when operating heavy commercial vehicles, as authorities continue efforts to reduce the number of fatal accidents on Kenyan highways.
The latest tragedy adds to the growing list of fatal road accidents reported across the country, highlighting the persistent challenge of road safety despite ongoing campaigns aimed at reducing traffic-related deaths.
