Kenya Names Strong Athletics Team for Glasgow Commonwealth Games

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) have unveiled a formidable athletics team that will represent the country at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, underscoring the nation’s rich depth of talent across track and field disciplines.

The bonanza has been scheduled on July 23 to August

The squad blends experienced international stars with emerging athletes, reflecting Kenya’s continued dominance in middle and long-distance running while also strengthening its presence in sprints, field events and race walking.

Leading the team is sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala, who will spearhead Kenya’s campaign in the men’s 100 metres alongside Meshack Babu and Mark Otieno. Omanyala remains one of Kenya’s brightest medal prospects and will be aiming to make history on the Commonwealth stage.

In the middle-distance events, former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot and rising star Reynold Cheruiyot will compete in the men’s mile, while Wyclife Kinyamal leads the men’s 800m contingent. The women’s 800m team features Lilian Odira, Janet Amimo and Vivian Chebet.

Kenya’s traditional strength in distance running is evident in the selection of Daniel Ebenyo for the men’s 10,000m alongside Edwin Kurgat and Ishmael Rokitto. The women’s long-distance squad includes Diana Wanza, Miriam Chebet, Caroline Nyaga and Rebecca Mwangi.

The steeplechase team is expected to be among the country’s strongest medal contenders. World-class athlete Faith Cherotich will line up in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase together with Celestine Biwott, while Simon Koech, Edmund Serem and Leonard Bett will contest the men’s race.

Kenya will also field athletes in a wide range of field events. World champion javelin thrower Julius Yego, headlines the field events team. Other notable names include Irene Jepkemboi in women’s javelin, Belinda Oburu in shot put, Faith Kipsang in long jump and Edwin Too in the decathlon.

The team’s selection demonstrates Kenya’s ambition to challenge for medals across multiple disciplines beyond its traditional distance-running strongholds. With a blend of established champions and promising young athletes, expectations are high that Team Kenya will deliver a strong performance and further cement the country’s reputation as a global athletics powerhouse when the Games get underway in Glasgow.
