UDA Leaders Call for Peaceful Polls and National Unity Ahead of By-Elections
Senior leaders from the ruling party have called for peaceful and democratic electoral processes as the country heads into upcoming by-elections in different parts of the country.
Speaking during a party gathering, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar reaffirmed the party’s commitment to participating in elections across the country, saying the party remains confident and prepared to compete in every region.
“We take our elections very seriously,” said Omar, adding that the party was optimistic of winning several seats in the ongoing contests.
He noted that UDA was fielding candidates in different regions, insisting that the party is national in outlook and should not be limited by regional politics or divisions.
“Wherever there is an election, UDA will be there. Whatever the situation or perceptions, UDA will field a candidate because UDA is a national party,” he said.
The Secretary General further criticized divisive politics and urged leaders to avoid inflammatory remarks that could divide Kenyans along political or regional lines.
“I never thought in my time I would hear leaders refer to others as traitors. These are the kinds of things we must shun,” he stated.
Omar praised party members and leaders for standing firm against what he termed as chauvinism, parochialism, and unnecessary political hostility, saying the country needs leaders who promote unity and inclusivity.
At the same time, he emphasized the need for peaceful campaigns and elections, noting that leaders have a responsibility to protect the country and safeguard democratic processes.
“We have a nation to safeguard, a people to protect and a programme to run,” he said.
According to Omar, every Kenyan should be allowed to participate freely in democratic processes without intimidation, violence or discrimination.
“We believe that every opinion must be given an equal opportunity to participate in a democratic process without violence and without intimidation,” he added.
He further expressed confidence that political competition should not divide citizens after elections, calling on leaders and supporters to maintain peace and coexistence even after the polls.
“All leaders must move on after the elections as one people, indivisible and committed to contributing to the nation’s growth,” he said.
The remarks come at a time when political activities are intensifying in different parts of the country ahead of several anticipated by-elections.
