Nairobi Hospital Introduces Modern LDR Suites in Major Leap for Maternal Healthcare

The Nairobi Hospital has taken a bold leap in reimagining maternity care with the official launch of its state-of-the-art Labour, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) suites, setting a new benchmark in maternal and neonatal services in Kenya.

The new LDR suites six fully equipped, private rooms capable of accommodating up to 90 births monthly are designed to house the entire childbirth journey in one location, from labour through delivery and postnatal recovery. The move eliminates the need for multiple patient transfers, enhancing both clinical safety and emotional well-being.

“This milestone is a reflection of our relentless commitment to delivering world-class care that centres on the needs and dignity of our patients,” said Dr Barcley Onyambu, Chairman of The Nairobi Hospital Board. “Childbirth is a profound moment in a family’s life, and our LDR suites ensure it happens in an environment designed for safety, comfort, and choice.”

The investment is part of the hospital’s wider strategy to modernise maternal healthcare and align with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals.

The suites are fully integrated with the Social Health Authority (SHA) the country’s digital health financing system which helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses while improving service access for expectant mothers under government-supported health schemes.

“No mother should face financial uncertainty during childbirth,” noted Dr Agnes Gachoki, Chairperson of the Medical Advisory Committee. “Through SHA integration, even those under public UHC can now access dignified, quality care without fear of financial strain.”

Dr John Ondero Ongech, Chairperson of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Committee, praised the shift as not just infrastructural but philosophical.

“Gone are the days of shuttling mothers from ward to ward. These suites reflect a new model of emotionally intelligent, integrated care where a woman’s agency, comfort, and dignity come first.”

The launch underscores The Nairobi Hospital’s broader vision to blend medical innovation with compassionate caregiving. Each LDR suite is supported by a multidisciplinary team including obstetricians, midwives, anaesthetists, and paediatricians and enhanced by digital monitoring systems to ensure real-time decision-making and patient safety.

“This isn’t just about delivering babies,” Dr Ongech added. “It’s about delivering a better future one birth at a time.”

The unveiling follows another recent milestone: the introduction of the AI-powered Siemens SOMATOM Drive 256-slice CT scanner, aimed at advancing diagnostic care and combating non-communicable diseases. To mark that achievement, the hospital has been offering a 10% discount on all CT scan services, valid through 15 July 2025.

With these innovations, The Nairobi Hospital continues to solidify its reputation as a regional leader in quality, patient-centred healthcare.
