Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Handed 13-Year Jail Term in KSh588 Million Graft Case
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to an additional 13 years in prison or pay a KSh21 million fine following his conviction in a money laundering case linked to the controversial KSh588.7 million road construction tender.
The sentence was handed down on Monday, November 2, 2026, by Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa over three money laundering counts arising from the irregular award of a road construction contract during Waititu’s tenure as Kiambu Governor.
The court imposed a KSh10 million fine on Waititu under the first count, with a five-year jail term in default of payment.
Under the second count, he was fined KSh6 million or four years in prison, while the third count attracted a KSh5 million fine or an additional four-year prison term.
However, the court directed that the latest sentences run concurrently with Waititu’s existing 12-year prison term imposed in February 2025. This means he will not serve an additional 13 years after completing his current sentence.
In its ruling, the court said it had considered the mitigation presented by the accused persons, submissions from the prosecution, the seriousness of the offences and the applicable legal provisions before determining the penalties.
Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangari Ndung’u, was also handed penalties over the three money laundering counts. She was fined a total of KSh22 million across the counts, with alternative custodial sentences provided for failure to pay the applicable fines.
The case revolves around a KSh588.7 million road construction contract awarded by the Kiambu County Government during the 2017/2018 financial year when Waititu was governor.
Investigations established that the contract, which involved upgrading gravel roads to bitumen standards, was irregularly awarded to Testimony Enterprises Limited.
Waititu was previously convicted of corruption-related offences after the prosecution linked him to the receipt of KSh25 million from the contractor.
In February 2025, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison or an alternative fine in connection with the graft case.
His subsequent appeal was dismissed by High Court Justice Rose Ougo, who upheld his conviction and sentence. The judge also overturned earlier acquittals on money laundering charges, finding Waititu, his wife and other co-accused guilty on the respective counts.
The latest sentencing marks another major development in the high-profile corruption case, which has attracted significant public attention because of the millions of shillings involved and the senior position previously held by the former county chief.
