National Alternative Alliance Calls for Urgent Reforms Ahead of Saba Saba Anniversary

As the country marks 25 years since the historic Saba Saba protests of 1990, the National Alternative Alliance (NAA) has issued a powerful statement warning of an imminent national crisis if urgent reforms are not implemented. Addressed to President William Ruto, the letter paints a grim picture of a nation gripped by civil unrest, rising authoritarianism, and eroding public trust in government institutions.

In the statement, NAA expresses concern over the state of governance in Kenya, citing rampant youth unemployment, corruption, and widespread human rights violations as key drivers of the ongoing unrest. The coalition warns that unless deliberate and immediate steps are taken to de-escalate tensions, the country risks plunging into further chaos.

“Kenya is burning,” the statement begins. “The dreams of generations and the promises enshrined in our Constitution are fading from the daily realities of ordinary citizens.”

The group is calling on the President to demonstrate courageous leadership by halting abductions, extrajudicial killings, and unlawful arrests. They urge the government to release detained protesters unconditionally and compensate families affected by police brutality since 2024.

NAA further calls for the establishment of a multi-sectoral, civic-led national dialogue to address youth inclusion, economic hardship, corruption, and intergenerational divides.

Among other demands, the alliance proposes a radical midterm review of government policies, and a complete overhaul of the national security leadership.

The statement singles out the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Inspector General of Police, and other senior officials, calling for their immediate removal to restore public trust.

NAA also criticizes the President’s inner circle, accusing it of recycling ineffective leaders and failing to deliver on the promises of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto. The statement lists over a dozen unresolved corruption scandals, including the KEMSA mosquito net procurement, contaminated sugar imports, and questionable privatization of state assets.

In addressing youth unemployment, NAA proposes the recruitment of 30,000 new personnel in the police and KDF, revival of youth enterprise programs, restoration of student electoral rights, and expansion of job opportunities through TSC and public works.

The alliance urges the President to act decisively, calling the moment a national turning point: “The future of our nation, and the hopes of millions of Kenyans, especially the youth, hang in the balance.”
