Kenyan Universities Launch Groundbreaking PR Challenge to Shape Future Industry Leaders

Mount Kenya University (MKU), Strathmore University, and Riara University have joined forces to launch the inaugural University PR Challenge, a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of public relations professionals.

Set to take place on August 26, 2025, at Aga Khan University also the academic partner the competition brings together student-led teams from participating universities to tackle real-world public relations case studies. The scenarios, curated by top PR professionals, focus on crisis communication, brand strategy, digital engagement, and corporate reputation.

Under faculty mentorship, students are expected to apply strategic insight, creative problem-solving, and teamwork under high-pressure conditions.

Their submissions are under confidential review by a panel of expert judges drawn from Kenya’s media and PR industries. One anonymous judge praised the entries, noting the students’ creativity and depth of strategy as “exactly what the industry needs.”

MKU’s faculty coordinator Koome Ikunyua emphasized the challenge’s role in bridging academic learning and professional realities, while Elizabeth Amollo of Riara University described it as “essential” for building competence and confidence. Dr. Esther Kingo’ri of Strathmore University added that it encourages critical thinking, research, and collaboration.

The University PR Challenge, the first of its kind in the region, aims to become an annual event that fosters ethical practice, innovation, and excellence in PR education. Winners will be announced ahead of the Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW), a premier gathering of communication professionals from across the continent.

The top team will earn mentorship from leading PR experts, internships, and public recognition firmly positioning the competition as a game-changing platform for Kenya’s emerging public relations talent.
