Four Arrested in Kenya for Impersonating SHA Officials, Stealing $2,300

Four individuals have been arrested in Kenya for allegedly impersonating officials from the Social Health Authority and stealing $2,300 (approximately Sh251,000) from a victim.

The suspects, identified as Peter Muriithi, Catherine Kinyua, Lilian Njeri, and Samuel Mbuthia, were taken into custody after a complaint was filed by a man who claimed they had convinced him to surrender his mobile phone under the guise of completing a legitimate SHA membership registration.

According to police, the suspects used the phone to transfer funds from the victim’s account to mobile numbers linked to them.

Law enforcement officers from Marimanti launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of the four suspects. A search of their premises uncovered SHA-branded T-shirts, name tags, membership cards, informational leaflets, and multiple SIM cards.

A motor vehicle, KDP 267C, Toyota Prado, believed to have been used in the scam, was impounded, along with a number plate KDS 399C.

The suspects are currently being held at Marimanti Police Station, pending arraignment.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if there are any additional suspects or victims involved in the scam.

The Social Health Authority has warned Kenyans to be cautious of scammers posing as officials and to verify the authenticity of individuals claiming to represent the organization.
