Equity Group Foundation Enrolls 750 Scholars in Esteemed Leadership Program
Equity Group Foundation has selected 750 top-performing secondary school graduates to join its esteemed Equity Leaders Program (ELP), a pre-university internship initiative aimed at nurturing future leaders.
The scholars, who excelled in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), will embark on a six-month paid internship at Equity Bank branches nationwide before transitioning to university later this year.
The new cohort comprises 350 Wings to Fly and Elimu Scholars who attained Grade A and A-, 167 top-performing students from various sub-counties who scored Grade A (Plain), and 233 national scholars with a minimum of 84 points.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman, Dr. James Mwangi, commended the scholars for their academic excellence and resilience.
“This program is not just about work experience it’s about shaping leaders who will drive transformation in their communities and beyond. You are the future of Africa, and Equity is committed to supporting your journey to greatness,” he said.
The commissioning followed a two-week intensive induction that exposed scholars to mentorship sessions led by industry leaders, including Equity Group executives. Discussions focused on leadership, personal growth, and community impact to equip scholars with essential skills for academic and professional success.
Making his remarks, Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director, Moses Nyabanda, underscored the significance of integrity and values in leadership.
“We believe in professionalism, teamwork, and respect for our customers. As future leaders, you must uphold these principles in your careers and daily lives,” he advised.
As part of the program, scholars will receive a monthly stipend, with a portion saved for their university transition, instilling financial discipline. They will also benefit from mentorship by accomplished professionals, guiding them in career choices and leadership development.
Among the scholars is Dieume Baraka, a former Starehe Boys Centre student who overcame adversity, including displacement and life in refugee camps, to excel in his studies.
“Education has been my key to a brighter future. This opportunity will empower me to contribute to peace and unity in my community,” he shared.
Salmo Abdullahi Hassan of Parklands Arya Girls Secondary School expressed gratitude for the exposure and mentorship.
“The leadership training has been incredible, and I look forward to learning more during the internship,” she said.

At the same time, Elema Badaqe Duba from Makueni Boys High School, who grew up in challenging conditions in Marsabit, sees the program as a gateway to transforming his family’s future.Since its inception, ELP has supported 29,515 scholars, with 9,700 benefiting from the pre-university internship.
Additionally, 970 scholars have secured fully funded scholarships to study in 233 universities across 37 countries, including Ivy League institutions. The program’s global outreach fosters innovation and leadership by providing exposure to world-class education and diverse perspectives.
ELP alumni continue to make significant contributions, notably in healthcare, where they have established 132 Equity Afya medical centers across Kenya and five in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With the latest cohort, Equity Group Foundation reaffirms its commitment to shaping Africa’s future through education, leadership, and economic empowerment.
