EPK Hands Over Final Batch of JSS Science Laboratories in Nandi County Reaffirming Commitment to STEM Education
Eastern Produce Kenya (EPK) has officially handed over the final batch of Junior Secondary School (JSS) science laboratories in Nandi County, marking a major milestone in its ongoing efforts to advance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in Kenya. This handover represents the culmination of EPK’s 2025 pledge to promote practical learning under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and its broader vision of empowering local communities through sustainable education investment.
The initiative, which is part of EPK’s long-standing community relations and educational development programme, aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education. It seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable access to quality learning for students, particularly in rural and underserved regions where practical learning resources remain limited.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held in Nandi County, the Chief Guest and County Director of Education, Mr Harrison Muriuki, commended EPK for its steadfast contribution to the growth of education in the region. He lauded the company for demonstrating how the private sector can play a vital role in complementing government efforts to strengthen STEM education.
“Partnerships between the private sector and education stakeholders are vital, not only in expanding access to quality STEM learning, but also in equipping learners with the skills and competencies needed to seize future opportunities,” said Mr Muriuki.
He emphasized that the establishment of science laboratories under the CBC framework would significantly improve students’ understanding of science and other technical subjects by providing hands-on experience. According to him, such initiatives go beyond classroom theory and allow learners to connect scientific concepts with real-life applications, thus preparing them for the evolving demands of the modern world.
EPK has been working closely with county education stakeholders and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Quality Assurance and Standards Officers to ensure the laboratories meet the Ministry of Education’s specifications. The company’s collaborative approach has ensured that the facilities are not only fully equipped but also aligned with the national curriculum and the practical learning needs of students.
The newly completed laboratories form part of EPK’s broader sustainability agenda, which integrates education, community welfare and environmental stewardship. The company’s management reiterated that education remains at the heart of its social investment strategy, viewing it as a key driver for community transformation.
Speaking during the event, EPK’s General Manager, West Operations, Mr Peter Goin, noted that the handover marks both an end and a beginning — the completion of one phase and the start of a renewed commitment to the future of education in Kenya.
“At EPK, we believe that every learner deserves access to facilities that inspire innovation, curiosity and problem-solving. By investing in these laboratories, we are not only supporting the government’s CBC implementation but also empowering the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators,” said Mr Goin.
The event also brought together local leaders, education officials and community representatives who acknowledged the transformative impact of EPK’s educational investments. Hon Isaac Mosbei, the Member of County Assembly for Kaptumo Kaboi Ward, applauded the company for its dedication to improving learning standards in Nandi County. He said the laboratories would play a crucial role in nurturing future professionals who could drive local and national development.
Through consistent partnerships and targeted community investments, EPK continues to strengthen its reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. Its efforts are not limited to infrastructure development but also include mentorship initiatives, scholarship programmes and teacher support to improve learning outcomes in schools within its operational regions.
To date, EPK’s educational investments have amounted to over KSh 33 million, resulting in the completion of 21 science laboratories and one IT lab across several schools in Nandi County. These projects underscore the company’s commitment to the social pillar of sustainability and its dedication to empowering future generations through education.
By focusing on quality, inclusivity and accessibility, EPK’s STEM programme ensures that learners in rural communities have the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. The company’s continued collaboration with education experts and local leaders ensures that each project remains relevant, practical and responsive to learners’ evolving needs.
As EPK plans to extend the programme into 2026, its leadership reaffirmed that the company will remain an active partner in shaping Kenya’s educational landscape. The initiative will continue to prioritize schools in rural communities where access to laboratories and modern learning tools remains a challenge.
The handover of the final batch of laboratories in Nandi County not only symbolizes the successful implementation of EPK’s 2025 education plan but also sets the stage for long-term progress in science and technology education. By fostering a culture of innovation and learning, the company is helping young learners unlock their potential and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s socio-economic growth.
EPK’s education initiatives, combined with its strong partnership with the government and community stakeholders, reflect a model of sustainable corporate citizenship that aligns business success with social impact. The company’s continued investment in education reaffirms its belief that the future of Kenya’s progress lies in empowering its youth through knowle
dge, innovation and opportunity.
