Chief Justice Koome Hosts Dutch Royal Couple in Historic Supreme Court Visit

Chief Justice Martha Koome today welcomed His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the Supreme Court Building in Nairobi.

The Royal Couple is on a State Visit to Kenya, reinforcing the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to the rule of law, democracy, and good governance.

Safeguarding Independence discussions between the Judiciary and the Dutch delegation focused on key legal and governance issues, particularly the independence of the Judiciary as a pillar of democracy.

Chief Justice Koome reaffirmed that an impartial judicial system is essential to upholding constitutional rights, ensuring fair trials, and protecting freedoms. She reiterated the Judiciary’s steadfast resistance to external pressures whether political or private stressing that an independent court system is vital for long-term national stability.

People-Centred Justice and Dutch SupportKenya’s Judiciary has been advancing initiatives to enhance access to justice, with strong backing from the Dutch Government through the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO).

Among these is the Specialized Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Courts, designed to support survivors through trauma-informed, victim-centered processes. Additionally, the Small Claims Court has significantly expedited the resolution of commercial disputes for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), fostering a business-friendly legal environment.

The visit also highlighted Kenya’s progress in women’s leadership within the justice system. Chief Justice Koome was joined by Supreme Court Judge Njoki Ndung’u, Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, and Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, showcasing the increasing role of women in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape.

Beyond access to justice, Chief Justice Koome underscored the Judiciary’s commitment to fighting corruption, promoting climate justice, and ensuring accountability in law enforcement. She emphasized continued collaboration with relevant agencies to adapt to emerging societal challenges.

During their tour of the Judiciary Museum, located in the Supreme Court Building’s basement, the Dutch Royal Couple explored Kenya’s legal heritage and constitutional transformation journey.

The historic visit reaffirmed the critical role of strong and independent judicial institutions and underscored the deepening Kenya-Netherlands partnership in championing democracy, human rights, and accessible justice for all.
