Kevin reigns in Accra Ghana
Kenya opened its medal campaign in style at the ongoing African Championships in Accra, Ghana, with Kevin Chesang clinching the country’s first gold medal in the men’s 10,000m final.
Chesang produced a strong performance on the track, crossing the finish line in 28 minutes and 30 seconds to hand Kenya an early victory at the continental showpiece. While his compatriot Silas Senchura fought strongly to secure third place in 28:30.57.
In the mixed 4x400m relay, Team Kenya added another medal after securing bronze in a competitive race dominated by Nigeria and Botswana. Nigeria claimed gold ahead of Botswana, who settled for silver, as Kenya completed the podium places.

The championships, running from May 12 to May 17, 2026, have attracted top athletes from across the continent, with Kenya fielding a strong delegation of 70 athletes.
Kenya’s impressive start in Accra continues the country’s dominance in African athletics following strong performances at the 2024 African Games, which were also staged in the Ghanaian capital of Accra.
