Willstone Homes Threatens Legal Action Against Nation Media Over Defamatory Front-Page
Nation Media Group (NMG) is facing a potential legal battle after Willstone Homes Limited issued a formal demand seeking Ksh 2 billion in damages, citing a front-page exposé that allegedly linked the real estate firm to fraudulent housing schemes.
The controversial article, titled Unmasked: Faces in Home Buying Scams, appeared in the June 4 edition of the Daily Nation and has drawn sharp criticism from Willstone Homes, which claims the story was not only misleading but published with malicious intent.
Represented by N.M. Kamwendwa & Co. Advocates, the company says the publication violated journalistic ethics by failing to reach out for comment before going to print contravening the Media Act, 2007, which requires fairness and accuracy, particularly when reporting negatively on individuals or entities.
“The article was sensational and reckless, published to attract undue attention at the expense of our client’s reputation,” the firm’s legal team noted in a demand letter received by NMG on the same day.
The letter outlines three key demands: an immediate stop to any further publication of the article, a public apology on the front page of the June 5 Daily Nation, and Ksh 2 billion in compensation for alleged reputational and financial losses.
More than just a corporate reputation issue, the case now raises wider concerns about media accountability, especially in investigative journalism that directly impacts businesses and livelihoods.
Willstone Homes says the fallout from the publication has already strained its relations with local and international partners.
The firm, which positions itself as a reputable player in Kenya’s real estate market, says the article risks derailing years of trust built with clients.NMG has seven days to respond or face legal proceedings.
