Konza Technopolis, Kenya – June 24, 2026 — Technopolis Development Authority (formerly Konza Technopolis Development Authority) has today successfully conducted a drone-enabled seedball broadcast at the Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy. This initiative promotes the restoration and regeneration in the newly registered urban conservancy, environmental stability and agricultural productivity with the utilization of innovative technologies.
A total of 75kg’s of seedballs were deployed by drones over targeted zones of degraded savannah within the Conservancy. The exercise marks one of the first drone-assisted ecological restoration broadcasts within a Kenyan urban-adjacent conservancy. Three main species of trees namely the wild Olive, shittah tree & the fever tree were spread across the conservancy. Seedballs are seed-bearing spheres of compacted charcoal, clay, dust and compost that protect native seeds from predation, retain moisture and provide a micro-nutrient environment that improves germination rates by up to 80% compared to bare seed broadcasting.
The activity showcased the utilization of modern airborne technology to create efficiency in landscape restoration and ecological regeneration. The seedball broadcasting exercise encompasses precise & rapid large scale seed dispersal which is extensively effective in increasing vegetation cover and restoring degraded land while supporting long term environmental conservation outcomes.
Speaking on the event Technopolis Development Authority Chief Manager Physical Planning Compliance and Environment, Annah Musyimi emphasised the importance of embracing new technologies as a catalyst for environmental conservation, sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity management.
“Technology is undoubtably a game changer and we as the Technopolis Development Authority have taken the lead in showcasing this. Today we have witnessed our drones deploy a total of 75kgs of seedballs which contain three different tree species over a total land area of 1000 acres in a matter of minutes. It is therefore key for not only us but majority of the conservation and agricultural sector to embrace technology to aid in productivity and development across our nation.”
These efforts at Konza Technopolis Wildlife Conservancy underscore Konza’s growing importance as a national centre for innovation, research, and the application of technology-based solutions that advance Kenya’s development priorities.
Konza Technopolis is home to the Konza National Drone Corridor which serves as Kenya’s dedicated testing and innovation zone for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), providing a controlled environment for the development, deployment & validation of drone technologies across multiple sectors. As a strategic national asset, the facility reinforces Kenya’s position as a regional leader in emerging technologies while advancing the country’s broader digital transformation and sustainable development agenda.
The Government continues to prioritise partnerships among Ministries, Departments and Agencies, research institutions, technology providers, and local communities to drive the uptake of innovative agricultural practices and enhance food security and environmental conservation efforts.
