Stephen Munyakho Returns Home After 14 Years on Death Row in Saudi Arabia
Kenya is celebrating the emotional return of Mr. Stephen Munyakho, who arrived back in the country after spending 14 years on death row in Saudi Arabia. His homecoming, marked by tears of joy and relief, signals the successful culmination of sustained diplomatic efforts by the Government of Kenya and its partners.
Mr. Munyakho’s release follows years of advocacy, legal appeals, and high-level negotiations between Kenyan and Saudi authorities. His case captured the attention of human rights advocates and the Kenyan diaspora, sparking a widespread campaign under the banner “Bring Stevo Back,” which rallied public support and amplified calls for justice.
In a moving reception ceremony, government officials, family members, and religious leaders welcomed Munyakho back, describing his return as a powerful reminder of the government’s unwavering commitment to protect and support Kenyans abroad.
“It was deeply moving to receive Mr. Munyakho alongside his family,” Said Musalia Mudavadi Prime Cabinet secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs “His return marks the end of a long, difficult journey and the triumph of relentless diplomacy and faith in justice.”

The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, the Office of the President, Kenya’s Embassy in Riyadh, and a network of local and international partners played instrumental roles in securing Munyakho’s freedom. Notable contributors included Principal Secretary Dr. Abraham Korir Sing’oei, Ambassador Mohamed Ruwange, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), and the Muslim World League.
President William Ruto personally thanked the Government of Saudi Arabia for its cooperation and receptiveness to Kenya’s appeals, noting that the outcome reflects the strength of bilateral ties and mutual respect between the two nations.
Mr. Munyakho, visibly emotional upon arrival, was encouraged by officials to document his ordeal a story of perseverance, faith, and redemption that they say could inspire future generations.
His return has been lauded across the country as a symbol of hope and the importance of never giving up on the fight for justice. Kenyans across social media have expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the long-awaited homecoming.
