Over 30 Uasin Gishu Students Secure UK Scholarships Through Chemalian Foundation

ELDORET, Kenya — More than 30 students from Uasin Gishu County are set to travel to the United Kingdom in January after securing scholarships from the Chemalian Foundation to pursue specialised courses aimed at improving their career prospects.

The beneficiaries, drawn from three sub-counties, say the opportunity offers a lifeline after years of struggling to find employment despite holding university qualifications.

Speaking in Eldoret, the foundation’s CEO, Dr. Dickson Chemalian, said the scholarship programme was established to support young graduates who have been unable to secure meaningful work locally. He noted that providing them with access to advanced training abroad would empower them to build sustainable careers.

“Education is the equalizer. Helping these students further their studies is the surest way to open doors and transform their lives,” Dr. Chemalian said.

Among the beneficiaries is Joan Chepchirchir, who plans to pursue a master’s degree in social work. She said she seized the chance after facing hardship since graduating, despite her parents’ sacrifices to support her education.

“Life has been really tough after school. Getting this opportunity gives me hope of finally turning things around,” she said.

Another student, Beatrice Chebet, currently pursuing Electronics Engineering at Moi University, expressed optimism about joining the programme once she completes her degree next year.

“The education standards in the UK are high, and opportunities for employment are better. Here in Kenya, many of us struggle even after completing our studies,” Chebet noted.

A spot check by the media shows that hundreds of Kenyan youths continue to seek opportunities abroad each year in search of better prospects.
