Mombasa Law Society Treasurer Highlights Constitutionalism at LSK Conference

The Treasurer of the Mombasa Law Society and the Coast Branch of the Law Society of Kenya has underscored the need to uphold constitutionalism and the rule of law amid rising political temperatures in the country.

Speaking in Diani during the Law Society of Kenya’s annual conference, which runs from August 12 to 16, the advocate expressed concern over what she described as a growing disregard for the constitution, including violations of human rights and disobedience of court orders. The conference is themed “Constitutionalism and the Rule of Law.”

“In recent times, we have witnessed demonstrations, and in the near future, political tensions are expected to escalate. There is a likelihood of the government using state machinery to suppress dissenting voices, thereby violating human rights,” she noted.

The meeting attracts up to four Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points for lawyers who attend the full program, which features various thematic discussions relevant to legal practice.

She said the Mombasa Law Society and the LSK Coast Branch have been active in defending the public’s rights, particularly during demonstrations, and have conducted legal aid clinics to educate citizens on their constitutional rights. The Council has also prioritized member welfare, addressing mental health, fitness, and professional practice concerns.

Looking ahead, the Treasurer revealed plans to vie for the position of Coast Representative to the Law Society of Kenya when the time is right. “This is not the time for campaigns, but when the time comes, I will engage members across the country, discuss my manifesto, and listen to their needs,” she said.

The conference brings together lawyers from across Kenya to share strategies on reinforcing constitutional governance and protecting human rights.
