HCG Launches Advanced PET CT Scan to Revolutionize Cancer Diagnosis in Kenya

In a groundbreaking move set to transform oncology care in Kenya, HCG Cancer Centre officially launched its state-of-the-art PET CT Scan, integrating Gallium-68 radiotracer technology.

The advancement promises earlier cancer detection, more accurate diagnosis, and improved treatment outcomes for patients across the region. The PET CT (Positron Emission Tomography computed Tomography) combines metabolic and anatomical imaging, offering high sensitivity in identifying tumors at early stages.

The technology also enables monitoring of treatment responses and potential recurrence, minimizing the need for overseas travel for specialized cancer diagnostics.

Speaking at the launch, HCG Executive Director Dr. B.S. Ajai Kumar emphasized the organization’s commitment to localized excellence in cancer care.

“Our vision is clear to bring world-class oncology services closer to patients. It’s no longer necessary for Kenyans to travel abroad, endure the hardships of visa applications, or face the uncertainty of foreign treatment. We want the best care to be available right here,” he said.

Dr. Kumar further praised the collaboration with MP Shah Hospital, noting, “With trust and unity, we can achieve a center of excellence in Kenya, just as we have in India. Our goal is not to lure patients abroad but to treat them with dignity and precision here at home.”

HCG’s Chief Operating Officer, Bhupendra Kumar Bharti, highlighted that the new PET CT scan, equipped with Gallium-68 tracers, offers unparalleled capabilities.

“This is the first such technology in East Africa outside South Africa. With four specialized scans already available, including prostate and neuroendocrine tumor scans, we are now rolling out even more advanced imaging options,” he said.

Importantly, he noted that costs are largely covered under the State Health Insurance Agency (SHA), meaning patients will pay only a minimal out-of-pocket fee.

“Gone are the days Kenyans had to sell property or organize fundraisers to seek cancer treatment abroad,” Bharti assured.

Breast cancer survivor Sister Anne Gadego shared her testimony, underscoring the importance of early screening.

“Cancer is not a death sentence. My diagnosis was made through a simple wellness checkup here in Kenya. Thanks to early detection and treatment at HCG, I am now cancer-free,” she said, urging others to prioritize regular health screenings.

As HCG continues its mission, the new PET CT scan marks a significant milestone in enhancing Kenya’s capacity to fight cancer effectively and locally.
