Governor Bii and CS Murkomen Inspect Ongoing Works at 64 Stadium, Express Confidence in Timely Completion

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim and Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Friday conducted an extensive inspection tour of the ongoing construction works at the 64 Stadium in Eldoret, expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far.

The two leaders, the contractor undertaking the project — were joined by county officials, national government officers and engineers at the site, where works on the terraces and main pavilion are in advanced stages.

Governor Bii, who spoke first during the site visit, lauded the collaboration between the national government and the county government in reviving the historic facility, which has stalled for years. He said the completion of the stadium will be a game-changer for sports development in the North Rift region and the country at large.

“We are very happy as the County Government of Uasin Gishu to see the work that is going on here at 64 Stadium. This is a facility that our youth have waited for for a long time. We want to thank the national government for intervening and ensuring that this project is back on track,” Governor Bii said.

The county boss noted that Uasin Gishu is known as the home of champions, yet it has lacked a modern stadium to host national and international athletics and football events. He said once complete, the stadium will not only nurture talent but also create employment and boost business in Eldoret town.

“This stadium will give our young people a place to train and showcase their talents. It will also bring many economic benefits to our traders, hoteliers and boda boda operators when we host big tournaments here in Eldoret. We as a county are fully in support and we will continue to work closely with the contractor to ensure there are no interruptions,” he added.

On his part, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, assured Kenyans that the government is keen to deliver the facility within the set timelines as part of Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and other international assignments.

Murkomen said he was impressed by the pace of construction and the quality of work being done, noting that the contractor has scaled up both manpower and working hours to meet the deadline. He said the government will address any security and logistical challenges that could slow down the works.

“I have come here today to see for myself the progress at 64 Stadium. I am very encouraged by what I have seen. The works are moving well and the contractor has assured us that they will deliver. This is not just a stadium for Uasin Gishu, it is a national facility that will put Eldoret on the international map,” Murkomen said.

The CS emphasized that the government will not tolerate delays or shoddy work, adding that his ministry will coordinate with other agencies to ensure materials and personnel access the site without hindrance. He also called on local leaders and residents to own the project and protect it from vandalism and political interference.

“This project is part of President William Ruto’s commitment to ensure that every region has modern sports infrastructure. We want to ensure our youth have opportunities. We have agreed that the work must be done day and night so that we can finish early. We will provide the necessary security and support needed,” he said.

The 64 Stadium, with a capacity of over 10,000 seats upon completion, is expected to host football matches, athletics events and other national celebrations. Once complete, it will complement Kipchoge Keino Stadium, which is also undergoing renovation.

The inspection ended with both leaders expressing confidence that the facility will be ready for use in the coming months, a move that has raised optimism among sports enthusiasts in Uasin Gishu County.
