KenGen Names Ronoh Kibet Charles as Next CEO
Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has named Ronoh Kibet Charles as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, with his appointment taking effect on February 1, 2027.
Kibet will replace Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga, who is retiring, after emerging successful in a competitive recruitment process conducted by the company’s board.
In a notice announcing the appointment, KenGen said the incoming chief executive would undergo a transition period to allow for a smooth handover and maintain continuity in the company’s operations and strategic plans.
Kibet currently serves as KenGen’s General Manager for Commercial Services, overseeing energy markets, investments, new business development and partnerships. His responsibilities also cover marketing, corporate communication and sustainability.
He brings more than 17 years of experience in geothermal development, project implementation, commercial strategy and business growth. During his career, he has contributed to renewable energy development, the expansion of KenGen’s international consultancy services and the advancement of the Olkaria Green Energy Park.
His experience in commercial operations and energy development is expected to be valuable as the company pursues its growth plans and explores new business opportunities.
Kibet holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Project Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
He is a certified Project Management Professional and an SAP Project System Consultant. He has also completed an Organisational Leadership Programme at Harvard Business School and undertaken executive education at IESE Business School in Spain, the University of Cape Town and Strathmore Business School.
The incoming CEO is affiliated with the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Geothermal Association of Kenya. He is also a recipient of the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW).
KenGen’s board expressed confidence in his ability to build on the company’s achievements, strengthen its workforce and steer the organisation towards further growth, innovation and sustainable value creation.
The board also commended Njenga for his service during his tenure as managing director and CEO.
According to the company, KenGen recorded a profit after tax of Sh10.48 billion in the 2025 financial year under Njenga’s leadership. The company also expanded its geothermal consultancy business, including assignments in Eswatini, while pursuing business diversification and investment opportunities.
Kibet takes over leadership at a time when Kenya continues to prioritise renewable energy, reliable electricity supply and increased investment in power generation to support economic development.
KenGen operates a diverse electricity generation portfolio that includes geothermal, hydroelectric, wind and thermal power. Its geothermal projects, particularly those in the Olkaria area, remain an important part of Kenya’s efforts to expand clean energy production.
His appointment sets the stage for a leadership transition focused on maintaining the company’s financial performance, developing new projects and strengthening its position in the regional energy market.
The board said it looked forward to working with Kibet as he takes charge of the company’s next phase of development.
