Engineers Raise Concerns Over Delays in Development Approvals in Nairobi County
The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has called on the Nairobi County Assembly to streamline the process of development approvals, citing prolonged delays and lack of transparency in the current system.
Speaking during a session with the County Assembly Planning Committee on Wednesday morning, IEK President Eng. Shammah Kitemi expressed concerns raised by engineers over inefficiencies in the county’s approval process.
“We have received numerous complaints from our members regarding delays in the approval of development submissions. In many cases, the status of the applications is unclear, and there is no mechanism for tracking progress,” said Eng. Kitemi.
He added that while engineers often face prolonged waiting periods for approvals in Nairobi, other counties have demonstrated more efficient and predictable processes.
“This is not just a matter of concern for engineers, but also for developers who face similar frustrations,” he said.
IEK offered to collaborate with the county to identify and address the existing bottlenecks, proposing a structured engagement to improve the current system.
“We are not only raising issues we are ready to be part of the solution,” Kitemi emphasized.
Chair of the County Assembly Planning Committee and Kitusuru Ward Representative, Alvin Palapala, welcomed the engineers’ input and assured them of action.
“We appreciate your concerns and will engage the county executive on this matter. After hearing from all sides, we will prepare a comprehensive report and ensure these issues are addressed. You have my word we will make sure you no longer have to complain,” said Palapala.
The meeting marked a significant step toward enhancing collaboration between professional bodies and county institutions, with the aim of improving service delivery and supporting urban development.
