DIGI AI Bus Launched in Nairobi to Equip Public Primary School Learners With Digital and AI Skills

Public primary school learners receive hands on digital, artificial intelligence and robotics training during the launch of the DIGI AI Bus by the Kings Rugby Development Academy at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Public primary school learners in Nairobi and Kiambu counties are set to benefit from enhanced digital learning following the launch of the DIGI AI Bus, a mobile digital classroom initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide among underserved communities.

The initiative was launched at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi by the Kings Rugby Development Academy in partnership with the Atlas Foundation UK and other stakeholders. The DIGI AI Bus will provide hands on access to computers, internet connectivity and digital learning tools for pupils in public primary schools that lack computer infrastructure.

The project targets learners from underserved areas and is designed to fast track their readiness for the global digital economy by introducing them to information and communication technology, digital literacy, artificial intelligence and robotics skills at an early age.

The mobile bus will be stationed at selected public primary schools across Nairobi and Kiambu counties, where learners will receive structured digital training aligned to the Competency Based Curriculum. The programme ensures that pupils who would otherwise have limited or no access to technology are not left behind as the country advances towards a digital future.

The Kings Rugby Development Academy has partnered with the Atlas Foundation UK for the past ten years to support underprivileged children in Kenya through sports, education and life skills development. The DIGI AI Bus marks an expansion of this long standing partnership by incorporating digital education as a key pillar in empowering young learners.

Speaking during the launch, Kings Rugby Development Academy Co founder and Chief Executive Officer James McGreevy said the initiative is a response to the growing need for digital inclusion in education. He noted that the DIGI AI Bus is fully equipped with computers, reliable internet connectivity and AI driven learning software that supports personalised education.

McGreevy explained that the learning software is aligned to the Competency Based Curriculum and is designed to adapt to each learner’s strengths and learning gaps. This allows pupils to progress at their own pace while learning in a shared classroom environment. He added that the initiative will help nurture problem solving skills, creativity and digital confidence among learners from an early age.

The programme has already shown positive impact on beneficiaries. Stephen Mlumo, a beneficiary of the Kenya Rugby Development Academy, praised the initiative and said it has transformed his perspective on technology. He said that before joining the programme, he never imagined that he would have access to a computer.

Mlumo added that the knowledge he gains from the DIGI AI Bus does not stop with him, as he shares what he learns with his classmates back at school. He said the programme has encouraged collaboration among learners and has given them confidence to explore new possibilities in education and beyond.

The DIGI AI Bus has been designed to operate in areas with limited or unreliable electricity supply. It is powered by rooftop solar panels connected to battery storage, with a silent generator available as backup. This ensures uninterrupted learning and allows the programme to reach schools that would otherwise be excluded from digital learning opportunities due to infrastructure challenges.

To strengthen the quality of training offered, the Kings Rugby Development Academy has partnered with Code Yetu, an organisation that specialises in digital literacy and coding education for children. Through this partnership, learners will receive training in coding and digital skills that are integrated into the Competency Based Curriculum.

Code Yetu Founder Asha Makana said the programme offers personalised AI based curricula tailored to the needs of each child. She explained that coding is integrated into learners’ daily studies to ensure that digital skills are developed naturally alongside other subjects.

Makana noted that the approach helps learners understand how technology can be used to solve real life problems, while also fostering creativity and innovation. She added that early exposure to coding prepares children for future careers in technology and other digital fields.

The Kings Rugby Development Academy has called on the government, schools, technology companies, foundations and development partners to support the initiative. The organisation said collaboration is essential in building an inclusive education system that ensures every child has access to digital learning opportunities regardless of their background.

The DIGI AI Bus is expected to play a key role in narrowing the digital divide and supporting national efforts to integrate technology into basic education. By bringing digital classrooms directly to public primary schools, the initiative aims to ensure that no learner is left behind in Kenya’s digital transformation journey.
