Clergy Lead Mombasa Mater Heart Run to Support Children With Heart Conditions

Hundreds of residents in Mombasa on Saturday participated in the 2026 Mater Heart Run aimed at raising funds for children in need of life-saving heart surgeries.

The event, held at Loreto Convent Mombasa, brought together families, schools, corporate organisations and church groups in support of vulnerable children suffering from heart conditions.

Archbishop Martin Kivuva and Coadjutor bishop Dominic Kimengich flagged off the runners and appealed to Kenyans to continue supporting the annual initiative.

Archbishop Kivuva described the run as an act of compassion and solidarity with children battling cardiac illnesses.

“Every step taken today is a step closer to giving a child a second chance at life,” he said.

Archbishop Kimengich, who recently assumed office as Coadjutor Archbishop of Mombasa, said he was honoured to participate in one of his first public engagements at the Coast region through a cause focused on saving lives.

He noted that the initiative not only raises awareness about childhood heart disease but also mobilises resources for families unable to afford specialised treatment.

A speech delivered by Sr Virginia Kasai on behalf of Mater Misericordiae Hospital Chief Executive Officer Sr Dr Mary Ngui said the hospital remained committed to supporting children with heart conditions through accessible cardiac care.

The hospital noted that since the launch of its cardiac programme in 1995, more than 6,000 children have benefited from treatment supported through donations and fundraising efforts.

According to the hospital, 505 children underwent treatment in 2025 alone through funds raised by well-wishers and partners.

Organisers said this year’s campaign, themed “Please Touch My Heart”, seeks to raise Sh150 million to facilitate more than 450 surgeries for children currently on the waiting list.

Participants took part in 5km and 10km races across the city, with organisers saying proceeds from the event will support surgeries, post-operative care and follow-up clinics at Mater Hospital in Nairobi.

The Mombasa edition formed part of a nationwide charity run held across 11 counties.

The Mater Heart Run has become one of the country’s leading charity initiatives, raising more than Sh108 million in 2024 and helping over 400 children receive treatment.
