Anti-Phishing Campaign Warns Public Over Fake M-Pesa SMS Alerts
Cybersecurity advocates are urging Kenyans to remain vigilant against a growing wave of phishing scams targeting M-Pesa users through fake SMS alerts. The fraudulent messages often claim there is a problem with a customer’s M-Pesa account and direct recipients to click a link to verify their details.
Experts warn that the links lead to fake websites designed to steal sensitive information, including M-Pesa PINs, passwords, and personal details. Once criminals obtain this information, they can gain unauthorized access to victims’ accounts and steal their money.
As part of the ongoing anti-phishing campaign, members of the public are being advised never to share their M-Pesa PIN, passwords, or one-time verification codes with anyone. Users should also avoid clicking on suspicious links and instead verify any account-related notifications through official M-Pesa channels.
The campaign encourages customers to report suspicious messages immediately and delete them to help reduce the spread of phishing attacks and protect their finances.
